Mobile Medicine and Information Rights

In the most recent issue of The Economist there is a short piece about mobile medical imaging and attachable sensors that can communicate over mobile phone networks. There are some important opportunities in this research, most notably in remote diagnosis, which can potentially help alleviate problems with health care delivery in the developing world.
But, something David Vogt has been bringing up lately, what if these applications were designed differently, with an eye to personal health information management and/or community health? If we think about health information as both an individual and community resource, then we'll think differently about the the manner in which such applications should be developed or designed.
