On Convergence

If you attend MoMoSFU you probably know that I am a firm believer in device convergence. Basically, I think that X years down the road we will all carry one piece of electronics rather than separate ones for mp3 playback, photo and video capture, making calls etc.

So I walk into a skytrain, watching the Lords of the Floor trailer on my phone. As I sit down, people around me start noticing - the Samsung D900 is a sleek device and plays great quality videos on an awesome screen. A few seconds later, one person says "WOW" and starts asking me questions about how that works. Later on, another one does so as well.

And then I notice another guy. He sits across from me - in one hand he has a chunky iPod video, which he's watching and in the other - a sizeable BlackBerry.

Great "vertical" devices that do their job really well. And noone gives a damn.

The cool factor has been driving progress in consumer electronics for quite some time. I believe that we're only a couple of years away from powerful, yet elegant all-in-one devices... I, for one, can't wait!

The average quality of cellphone UIs leaves me tempted to tape an iPod Nano to the back of my phone instead.
